It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents — except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in Vancouver that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness.

Between the two major cities in China that I visited, Guangzhou pulls me especially deep into my memory. I can feel the arid warmth of the smog that chokes the air I breathe, the sky scraping apartments that push into the clouds and dwarf every building I have ever seen surround me, the forests thick and wild as they clamor for space in the endless sea of faces that flow beneath them.
